In a major step toward building climate resilience, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have announced over $120 million in funding for climate adaptation projects targeting some of the most at-risk communities in Africa and Asia.
These bold initiatives will directly impact over 3.5 million people across Ghana, the Maldives, and Mauritania, empowering them with the tools, knowledge, and infrastructure needed to cope with escalating climate risks.

🇬🇭 Ghana Leads with $70M Agroecosystem & Farming Resilience Plan
Ghana will receive the lion’s share—$70 million, including $63 million in GCF grants—to strengthen the climate resilience of agriculture and rural livelihoods in the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions.

28,000 hectares of degraded land restored

Promotion of dry-season farming via sustainable water storage
Led by Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency and Meteorological Agency, the project will directly benefit over 619,000 people, with early warning systems reaching 2.9 million. An estimated 120,000 farmers will enjoy improved food security and crop yields through climate-smart agriculture.
🌊 Maldives: Island Nation Builds Toward 100% Early Warning Coverage
The Maldives is launching a $25 million project to meet the “Early Warnings for All” (EW4All) target by 2027. This initiative will help:

Implement a nationwide hazard alert system

Strengthen national meteorological and disaster preparedness services

Ensure every citizen has access to climate alerts and protection tools
This project enhances the Maldives’ ability to handle rising sea levels and extreme weather threats through digital technology and community-level awareness.
🏜️ Mauritania: Combating Drought with Water Security and Land Management
Mauritania will also receive $25 million to tackle its increasing vulnerability to desertification and water scarcity. Key focus areas include:
