Attorney-General self-criticises GBA remarks, says Tuah-Yeboah

Attorney-General self-criticises GBA remarks, says Tuah-Yeboah

What Tuah-Yeboah Claims

Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, former Deputy Attorney-General, argued that when the Attorney-General called the GBA “partisan” and “self-serving”, he was undermining his own role. Since Dr. Ayine leads the Bar by statute, Tuah-Yeboah said, criticism of the Bar’s conduct reflects on the leader himself.

Examples of Alleged Silence

Tuah-Yeboah pointed out prior episodes when the GBA stayed mum on constitutional matters under both the NDC and NPP governments. He recalled the removal of the CHRAJ Commissioner in 2014 and the replacement of the Electoral Commission chair in 2017 as times when the Bar did not speak up.

Tuah-Yeboah’s View on Leadership and Response

He urged the Attorney-General to have acted earlier if he believed the Bar had failed in its duty, rather than issuing public rebukes. Tuah-Yeboah also emphasized that inconsistent past behaviour doesn’t justify repeating mistakes.

On Comparing Institutions

Further, Tuah-Yeboah challenged Dr. Ayine’s comparison between the Electoral Commission and the Chief Justice. He noted that the two bodies differ fundamentally: the Chief Justice leads an arm of government, while the Electoral Commission functions independently though technically under executive oversight.
