Bishop Agyenta offers special Easter prayer for peace in Bawku, environs   | Ghana News Agency

In a heartfelt gesture, Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, extended a special Easter prayer aimed at fostering lasting peace in Bawku and its surrounding areas. The bishop’s plea to God during this Easter celebration was for harmony among the warring factions, urging them to embrace peace.

For decades, Bawku has been mired in a chieftaincy conflict that has resulted in significant loss of life and property. This prolonged conflict has severely disrupted social and economic activities, including education and healthcare, bringing economic progress to a halt.

Since its resurgence in November 2021, the conflict has claimed over 300 lives and has recently intensified, spreading to regions such as Binduri and Walewale. During a Holy Mass at Bolgatanga’s Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, Bishop Agyenta led parishioners in a special prayer for peace in Bawku and other affected areas in Ghana.

“We make a special prayer for our brothers and sisters in Bawku, Binduri, and other conflict-affected areas, hoping they will find peace,” Bishop Agyenta prayed. “We also seek blessings for the mediation team and stakeholders working diligently to ensure lasting peace.”

In his homily, Bishop Agyenta emphasized that violence and conflict achieve nothing. “The passion of Jesus Christ culminating in Easter shows that violence cannot bring achievement,” he articulated. He encouraged conflicting parties to reject violence and follow the example of Jesus Christ, who abstained from violence even unto death.

The bishop underscored that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ deliver a potent message to Christians: to live righteously with the belief in life beyond this earth.
