Central Region GWCL attributes the water crisis to galamsey activities

In recent years, the Central Region of Ghana has been grappling with a severe water crisis, a situation that has been increasingly linked to illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey. The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has pointed to these activities as a primary cause of the region’s water shortages and contamination issues.

Galamsey operations, which often involve the unregulated extraction of gold and other minerals, have led to the pollution of rivers and streams, crucial sources of water for many communities. The toxic substances and silt from these mining activities have significantly affected water quality, making it difficult for the GWCL to treat and supply clean water.

The impact on local water sources has been profound, with many residents experiencing frequent disruptions in their water supply. This situation has prompted urgent calls for stronger enforcement of regulations to curb illegal mining and protect vital water resources. The GWCL and other stakeholders continue to work on solutions to address these challenges and improve water accessibility for the affected communities.
