Coalition of Political Parties Thanks Ghanaians for Massive Protest Turnout

In a show of gratitude, the Coalition of political parties has thanked Ghanaians for their overwhelming participation in a protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Mahama. The coalition, made up of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the People’s National Party (PNP), expressed their appreciation through the NPP’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, often known as ‘Nana B.’

Nana B took to Facebook to voice the coalition’s gratitude, stating, “The massive turnout reflects widespread discontent with the President’s actions, seen as an assault on democracy and the judiciary.” He also acknowledged the solidarity and dedication shown by the protesters and mentioned plans to outline the coalition’s next steps in the coming days.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic prior to the protest, Boakye announced that this demonstration was the first in a series of nationwide protests aimed at addressing what the coalition views as the unlawful suspension of the Chief Justice.

During the protest, three petitions were delivered—one to the Supreme Court, one to Parliament, and another to the presidency.

President Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo last month following the formation of a committee to investigate claims against her. This move, aligned with constitutional provisions and consultations with the Council of State, was cited under Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which outlines the process for probing allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.
