Dr. Naa Dedei Tagoe Appointed Chair of FIG Commission 8

Dr. Naa Dedei Tagoe, Vice Dean of the School of Railway and Infrastructure Development at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has been honored with the position of Chair of Commission 8 of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG). Her appointment was announced during the FIG Working Week in Brisbane, Australia.

In a recent newsletter, FIG highlighted Dr. Tagoe’s dual roles as Chair-Elect and incoming Vice-Chair (Administration) of Commission 8. Her appointment underscores her dedication to crafting spatial development strategies that are both technically robust and socially responsible. Dr. Tagoe prioritizes approaches tailored to the needs of rapidly expanding communities, particularly in Africa, reflecting the commission’s commitment to innovative and inclusive land governance.

Profile of Dr. Naa Dedei Tagoe

Dr. Tagoe completed her Ph.D. in Geomatics, with a focus on Photogrammetry, at the University of Cape Town from 2012 to 2016. At UMaT, she leads Infrastructure Development Programs, leveraging her extensive expertise in geospatial science, photogrammetry, and remote sensing. Her work incorporates advanced spatial technologies, including UAV mapping, GIS, and satellite remote sensing, to tackle sustainable development challenges across sectors such as land governance, agriculture, mining, environmental monitoring, and heritage conservation.

As a passionate mentor, particularly for women, Dr. Tagoe advocates for the responsible use of geospatial technologies in planning and policymaking. Her leadership reflects a vision for spatial development solutions that are inclusive, purpose-driven, and technologically advanced.

Dr. Tagoe’s research interests include employing geospatial technologies to promote and monitor Sustainable Development Goals, applying earth observation for climate change adaptation and mitigation, and utilizing UAVs, terrestrial laser scanning, and panoramic imagery for infrastructure and cultural heritage documentation.
