Finance Ministry Greenlights Payment of Teacher Salary Arrears

The Ministry of Finance in Ghana has officially sanctioned the disbursement of overdue salaries to employees of the Ghana Education Service (GES). This decision promises to deliver much-needed financial relief to thousands of teachers who have been awaiting their pay for several months.

On April 20th, a statement released by GES Management confirmed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) is authorized to initiate payments covering the period from August 2024 to November 2025. This decision follows a formal directive from the Ministry of Finance, which laid out an approved plan for addressing these outstanding salary commitments.

To manage financial impacts, the arrears will be distributed in four stages. Eligible teachers can expect to receive payments starting in May, with further instalments scheduled for June, July, and August. Each tranche will cover four months of back pay, aiding in alleviating financial pressures on both the educators and the state.

This long-awaited move is anticipated to bring significant relief to GES staff who have endured prolonged waits for their compensation. It also underscores the government’s commitment to streamlining payroll responsibilities within the education sector while balancing broader public sector wage obligations.
