Ghana Closes Embassy in Tehran, Begins Evacuation of Citizens Amid Israel-Iran Tensions

In response to escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, the Government of Ghana has taken swift action to protect its nationals residing in Iran. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the immediate closure of Ghana’s embassy in Tehran and the commencement of an emergency evacuation. This operation includes all Ghanaian citizens in Iran, such as diplomats, students, and professionals, and is being carried out through land routes for maximum safety.

The government describes the move as a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding Ghanaian lives amid the rapidly deteriorating security situation. Minister Ablakwa emphasized the urgency of the decision, underlining the Mahama administration’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad. As a precaution, embassy operations in Tel Aviv, Israel, have also been significantly scaled down, though no evacuation from Israel has been initiated at this time.

Ghanaian nationals in Israel are strongly advised to stay in close contact with the consular department as the situation evolves. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor developments closely and remains on high alert for any necessary interventions.

Reaffirming Ghana’s long-standing stance on global peace and diplomacy, the government has called on both Israel and Iran to de-escalate tensions through dialogue. Ghana is one of the first African nations to implement an evacuation in response to the crisis, highlighting its proactive approach to international conflict management and citizen protection.
