Strengthening Health Security as Ghana Commits $24.5 Million to GAVI
Ghana has taken a bold step to secure the country’s vaccine supply by paying $24.5 million to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced this move during the Government Accountability Series at the Presidency in Accra, highlighting it as a critical investment in Ghana’s future health resilience.
Increased Vaccine Budget to Prevent Shortages
This year, the government raised its vaccine budget by 46%, underscoring its commitment to immunization. The payment to GAVI ensures a consistent flow of vaccines, preventing disruptions that could lead to outbreaks. Mr. Akandoh emphasized that the funding guarantees access to essential vaccines across all communities in Ghana.
Nationwide Vaccine Rollout Begins in August
Starting in August, Ghana expects to receive hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses. These vaccines will be distributed countrywide, targeting vulnerable populations and reinforcing the national health system. “Investing in our children’s health today is securing Ghana’s tomorrow,” Mr. Akandoh stated, reaffirming the government’s prioritization of immunization as a developmental cornerstone.
Paving the Way for Local Vaccine Manufacturing
Beyond procurement, Ghana is laying the groundwork to become a regional vaccine manufacturing hub. The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the National Vaccine Institute and regulatory bodies, is working closely with the pharmaceutical industry to realize this goal.
A major step in this direction came when a private sector partner obtained market authorization from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to produce Snake Anti-Venom Serum at commercial scale. This achievement marks a significant shift from dependency on imports to local vaccine production.
Ghana’s Strategic Health Investment Pays Off
This proactive approach to vaccine funding and manufacturing positions Ghana as a health innovation leader in West Africa. By continually investing in immunization infrastructure and vaccine production, the country aims to ensure health security, self-reliance, and a healthier future for all Ghanaians.
