Ghana Revenue Authority Inspects Retailers for VAT Compliance

On January 6, 2026, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) conducted an important compliance check at Palace Mall, located on Spintex Road, to assess the adherence to recent tax reforms regarding Value Added Tax (VAT) and the elimination of the COVID-19 Levy.

Dr. Martin Yamborigya, the Commissioner of GRA’s Domestic Tax Division, led the enforcement team, which engaged with both shop managers and shoppers to ensure that the new VAT rate of 15 percent was being applied correctly.

The GRA officials meticulously reviewed pricing and billing practices at various outlets to confirm that the updated tax structure was being properly reflected at the point of sale. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to relieve financial pressures on consumers through reduced taxation.

Customers at the mall expressed their satisfaction with the recent changes, noting significant price reductions on their purchases. One shopper remarked, “I can now save money for fuel because the tax on items was a lot, but now it’s not.” Another individual echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The reduction in taxes has made a noticeable difference in my shopping experience.”

Shop managers confirmed that their billing systems had been adjusted to accommodate the new tax regime and expressed their full cooperation with the GRA’s compliance checks.

This inspection underscores the GRA’s commitment to ensuring that tax reforms are implemented fairly and that consumers benefit from the intended financial relief. The authority has pledged to monitor businesses continuously and provide ongoing education regarding compliance with the revised tax framework.
