Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Announce Strike Over Defamatory Claims

The Accra Chapter of the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association has declared a strike scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2025. This action comes in response to ongoing criticisms from the OR Foundation regarding the secondhand clothing sector, particularly activities in the Kantamanto market.

In a recent statement, the association condemned the OR Foundation for allegedly spreading “false, unbalanced, and damaging narratives” that misrepresent the industry’s impact on Ghana’s economy. They argue that these reports overlook the sector’s vital role in job creation, poverty alleviation, and providing sustainable livelihoods for many Ghanaians.

As a result, used clothing vendors in Accra have decided to halt trading activities in protest. The strike aims to uphold the dignity of traders, protect Ghana’s reputation, and demand fair treatment and accurate reporting.

Objectives of the Strike:

– Cease defamatory statements from the OR Foundation
– Defend the dignity and livelihood of used clothing dealers
– Protect Ghana’s image locally and internationally
– Ensure responsible and factual reporting on the secondhand clothing industry

The association emphasizes their commitment to peaceful protest, stating, “We will not remain silent while our industry and country’s reputation are unfairly attacked. This strike represents unified action to protect our community and national image.”
