HIV preventive drug in Ghana will be introduced in 2026, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission. The step is part of a national plan to reduce new HIV infections and expand access to preventive care.
Dr. Prosper Akanbong, the Commission’s Director-General, explained that the first doses will arrive through importation. However, he stressed that local production is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The Commission is working with pharmaceutical partners and donors to build the capacity for vaccine and drug manufacturing in Ghana.
The new drug will add strength to the country’s fight against HIV. It will support testing, treatment, and awareness campaigns already in place. By combining prevention and treatment, the Commission hopes to slow transmission and ease the long-term pressure on healthcare services.
Experts believe this plan could transform HIV prevention in Ghana. They say easier access to preventive drugs will protect vulnerable groups and reduce the overall number of new cases. At the same time, the program will give health workers new tools to reach high-risk communities.
Still, challenges must be faced. Funding, logistics, and proper training for health professionals are essential for success. Officials also noted that cooperation between government, civil society, and development partners will be required.
With this initiative, Ghana is joining other African countries investing in advanced HIV prevention strategies. If the program succeeds, it could become a model for the region’s fight against HIV.
