In a significant move, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has demanded a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Charles Amissah, a victim of a hit-and-run incident. Amissah reportedly faced barriers in receiving emergency medical treatment at three major hospitals in Accra, raising serious concerns about the responsiveness of the healthcare system.
During a session in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to instruct the Health Committee to call upon the management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the Police Hospital, and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. This comes in light of the events that transpired on the night of February 6, 2026, which led to Amissah’s untimely demise.
The Minority Leader emphasized the gravity of the situation, asserting that a life lost under such distressing conditions warrants immediate attention and scrutiny. He insisted that the Health Committee should investigate potential negligence or misconduct by medical staff, ensuring accountability for those involved.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “Mr Speaker, I urge you to summon the Chief Executive Officers and heads of emergency units from the hospitals in question. They must provide duty rosters and bed occupancy reports from that fateful night. We need to ascertain if the 2018 Ghana Health Service directive was violated and determine if negligence or misconduct occurred. Consequences should follow if misconduct or negligence is proven.”
In addition to focusing on healthcare services, Afenyo-Markin also addressed the individual responsible for the hit-and-run, calling on the Ghana Police Service to intensify efforts in locating and apprehending the driver. He remarked, “I implore the Ghana Police Service to utilize all available resources and investigative strategies to bring this individual to justice.”
