In anticipation of the King of Eswatini’s official visit—hosted by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II—Kejetia Market joined a region-wide clean-up exercise on June 21, 2025, organized by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). Market management and hundreds of traders swept walkways, emptied refuse bins, and cleared drainage channels to ensure Kejetia shines for the royal entourage and local patrons alike.
Speaking to reporters, newly appointed Managing Director Ernest Afayam unveiled a ground-breaking monthly sanitation drive to sustain market cleanliness year-round. Scheduled from 6 AM to 12 PM on a designated day each month, the program will be compulsory for all stallholders—with enforcement measures for non-compliance—to safeguard public health, boost visitor confidence, and uphold Kejetia’s reputation as West Africa’s busiest open-air market.
Beyond litter collection, Afayam pledged a comprehensive infrastructure audit to tackle chronic leakages, clogged plumbing, and erratic electrical faults that have plagued the market. By prioritizing high-impact repairs and routine maintenance, the market’s new leadership aims to modernize facilities, reduce downtime, and enhance the trading environment for thousands of merchants.
The initiative drew praise from Johnson Ankrah, Chairman of the Kumasi City Market Traders Union, who joined the clean-up and backed the monthly sanitation plan. While applauding the MD’s vision, Ankrah urged swift implementation of fair but firm penalties for traders who opt out—stressing that collective responsibility is the cornerstone of any lasting transformation at Kejetia Market.
