Mozambican President Advocates for Greater Unity and Cooperation in Portuguese-Speaking Countries

On July 15, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo inaugurated the 14th Ordinary Session of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) Parliamentary Assembly in Maputo, emphasizing the need for enhanced unity and inclusive governance among member states. President Chapo highlighted Mozambique’s commitment during its two-year presidency to fortify democracy, uphold the rule of law, and promote the recently advanced mobility agreement to enable freer movement of citizens within the CPLP.

According to President Chapo, the CPLP represents more than a “community of affection”; it is fundamentally a community defined by “responsibility and solidarity.” He urged member countries to engage in critical reflection on both their achievements and ongoing challenges to strengthen the CPLP’s role as a cohesive global voice. Central to Mozambique’s agenda are issues of youth empowerment, gender equality, and investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure — pillars considered essential for sustainable democratic development.

President Chapo expressed a vision for the assembly to serve as a platform for transformative decisions and renewed commitments, emphasizing that cooperation should transcend individual or group interests. He underscored the importance of unified action on pressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and the preservation of cultural diversity, calling for collaborative strategies across CPLP nations.

The session gathered representatives from all nine CPLP member countries, including Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor, to collectively address these priorities and strengthen ties within the community.
