PPP Calls for Enhanced Transparency in Asset Declarations

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is advocating for constitutional reforms aimed at improving transparency in the asset declaration process among public officials. This comes in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent initiatives promoting ethical leadership and transparency in governance.

President Mahama Commended for Ethical Leadership

The PPP has lauded President Mahama for his exemplary steps in ethical governance. The President recently introduced a Code of Conduct for Political Appointees and made a personal decision to declare and transfer gifted vehicles to the state. This act, according to the PPP, underscores the values of integrity and responsibility expected from public officials.

“We especially applaud the President’s decision to declare and transfer gifted vehicles to the state, a personal act of transparency that sets an important precedent,” stated the PPP.

Despite these commendable actions, the PPP has voiced concerns regarding the extension of the deadline for asset declarations by political appointees. Originally set for March 31, the deadline has been pushed to May 7, 2025. The party argues that such extensions may undermine the seriousness of the directive.

Call for Constitutional Amendments

The PPP has reiterated its long-standing call for reforms to ensure transparency in asset declarations. Currently, the Constitution requires public officials to declare assets, but these records remain inaccessible to the public. The PPP believes this lack of public access weakens accountability.

“We therefore call for an amendment to Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution,” the PPP suggested, advocating for these declarations to be accessible to enhance public oversight.
