The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is actively monitoring a potential cybersecurity breach involving unauthorized access to the personal information of some MTN Ghana customers. In a statement released on April 25, the DPC emphasized its collaboration with MTN Ghana, the National Communications Authority, and the Cybersecurity Authority to thoroughly investigate the issue.
The DPC has warned that if the investigations reveal a compromise of personal data due to negligence, MTN Ghana could face consequences under Act 843. “If it is determined that any Ghanaian citizen or resident’s personal information was compromised, the Commission will use its enforcement powers to hold MTN Ghana and/or the MTN Group accountable,” the statement said.
The statement also highlighted the importance of data privacy, stating, “Privacy and protection of personal information is a fundamental right. All data controllers and processors operating in Ghana, or handling the personal information of Ghanaian citizens, must strictly adhere to Act 843.”
The DPC urged all public and private entities to register with the Commission. This registration ensures accountability in handling personal information. The public is advised to verify if an institution or service provider is licensed to safeguard their personal data.
Additionally, the DPC encouraged people to stay vigilant, follow recommended digital safety practices, and report suspicious activities to service providers and the Commission. Updates on the investigation will be shared as they develop. The Commission is committed to maintaining transparency, accountability, and protecting individual rights in the digital space.
