The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), has announced a review of curfew hours in Nkwanta Township and surrounding communities in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region. This follows recommendations from the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in response to rising tensions in the area.
Effective Thursday, June 26, 2025, the new curfew hours are from 6:00 PM to 5:00 AM, as outlined in an Executive Instrument issued by the Ministry.
Call for Calm and Restraint
In the official statement, the government urged chiefs, youth leaders, opinion leaders, and residents to remain calm and adopt non-violent approaches in addressing the challenges facing the municipality.
“Government continues to urge all stakeholders to exercise restraint and channel their energies into ensuring lasting peace in the area,” the Minister emphasized.
Weapons Ban Remains in Full Force
As part of the ongoing security measures, there is a strict ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons within the affected areas. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating this directive.
“All persons are hereby reminded that carrying arms or offensive weapons in the Nkwanta Township and its environs is strictly prohibited. Offenders will be arrested and prosecuted without exception,” the statement added.
Background
The curfew adjustment comes in the wake of renewed ethnic clashes in the area that have already claimed at least one life and injured several others, following a dispute over traditional festival preparations. Local authorities have been working to de-escalate the situation and restore calm.
Government Commitment to Peace
The Interior Ministry reassures the public of its commitment to working with regional and local security agencies to maintain peace and protect lives and property in the region.

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP)
