President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the La General Hospital will be completed and fully operational by November 2027. During a site visit, President Mahama expressed satisfaction with the progress of the construction and emphasized the project’s importance for the local community.
Accompanied by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, President Mahama toured the hospital site, acknowledging the contractor’s efforts to maintain the construction schedule. He highlighted the critical need for the facility, particularly since its previous demolition redirected patients to other hospitals such as Ridge, Lekma, and Korle Bu.
“It’s crucial to restore this hospital with an additional 160 beds to enhance healthcare services,” President Mahama stated. He also addressed public concerns regarding emergency medical services, noting that the current shortage of beds exacerbates the situation.
To tackle this, the President revealed plans to repurpose the emergency center at Burma Camp, initially established during the COVID-19 pandemic, to handle emergency cases. This facility will serve as a critical resource for stabilizing patients before transferring them to permanent hospitals.
Additionally, President Mahama announced the termination of the Police Hospital project contract, citing delays, and revealed that a new contract would be awarded to expedite its completion.
Addressing broader healthcare improvements, President Mahama mentioned the launch of a primary healthcare initiative designed to reduce hospital visits through preventive measures. The program includes routine health checks like blood pressure and sugar level screenings to detect diseases early.
Health Minister Akandoh confirmed that the government allocated GH¢60 million to support the La General Hospital’s reconstruction, ensuring the project stays on track for its 2027 completion date.
