A woman from Northern Ghana, who has adopted the name Maame Serwaa, openly shared her feelings of embarrassment regarding her roots during a recent interview. In a candid conversation with Maame Frimpomaa Korankye, widely known as MFK, on Lawson Afisem, she revealed her struggles with her identity.
The thirty-something woman sought assistance from the show’s host and her team, stating that her boyfriend’s actions had humiliated her. During the discussion, she explained that she had decided to abandon the traditional Northern name given to her by her parents in favor of Maame Serwaa, a name she believes aligns her more with the Ashanti culture.
Despite being proud of her heritage, she admitted to feeling shy and embarrassed when identified as a Northerner, a sentiment she prefers to shield from her children and those outside her immediate circle. She described her original name as a source of discomfort that prompted her to seek a new identity that she feels more comfortable with.
This revelation has sparked discussions about cultural identity and the pressures individuals feel in conforming to societal expectations.
