Renowned artist Refik Anadol has unveiled a groundbreaking AI-driven art installation at Oxford University, transforming the institution’s historic botanical archives into a dynamic visual experience. Titled ‘Archive Dreaming,’ the installation features a massive LED screen displaying vibrant, shape-shifting forms inspired by nature, brought to life by Anadol’s advanced AI technology.
The installation is a centerpiece of the newly opened Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at Oxford, a hub for various academic disciplines including literature, philosophy, and music. Anadol’s work draws on nearly 68,000 images from Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries, renowned for their vast collections.
John Fulljames, director of the cultural program, highlighted the center’s mission to explore human meaning through diverse cultural expressions. ‘Archive Dreaming’ aligns with this vision by bridging the gap between technology and the humanities, offering a fresh perspective on archival data.
Anadol, a pioneer in AI art, employs his ‘Large Nature Model,’ an AI system trained on extensive nature datasets, to create what he calls ‘AI data paintings.’ His work aims to inspire a deeper appreciation of the natural world by reimagining static data as living, breathing entities.
Beyond its visual spectacle, ‘Archive Dreaming’ prompts reflection on technology’s role in reshaping our interaction with historical archives. Anadol emphasizes the potential of AI to revitalize how we perceive and engage with traditional repositories of knowledge.
Alongside Anadol, the Schwarzman Centre will feature collaborations with prominent artists like Rhiannon Giddens and Es Devlin, further integrating AI into cultural discourse. As automation increasingly influences various sectors, Anadol advocates for transparency and discernment in how artists utilize AI, distinguishing between mass-produced and uniquely crafted digital artworks.
The opening of Dataland, a museum dedicated to AI art in Los Angeles, marks another milestone in Anadol’s career, underscoring his belief that embracing new technologies enhances, rather than diminishes, the artistic legacy.
