On Thursday, April 23, 2026, a significant power outage plunged the Volta, Oti, and Tema Regions into darkness, impacting numerous residents and businesses. The blackout resulted from a combination of issues, including a technical challenge from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and multiple network faults.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed that the power disruption in the Volta and Oti Regions stemmed from a technical issue with GRIDCo’s line at the Asiekpe Bulk Supply Point. Areas such as Ho, Kpeve, Tsito, Kpando, Hohoe, Kadjebi, Jasikan, Nkwanta, and Dambai were among those affected. The ECG assured the public that efforts were underway to restore electricity as soon as GRIDCo resolves the challenge.
Additionally, a transformer fault in the Tema Region compounded the disruption, leaving communities like Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Akrade, and others without power. The ECG highlighted that engineers were actively working to fix the fault and resume power supply.
Moreover, an upstream challenge further exacerbated the situation in the Tema Region. The ECG stated that their engineers were prepared to address this issue, but no specific timeline for restoration was provided.
The simultaneous power disruptions across three regions left residents and businesses facing uncertainty, with some resorting to generators while others endured the inconvenience. The ECG encouraged patience from the public as they strive to resolve the ongoing challenges. Updates are expected as restoration efforts progress.
