Bill Gates: Solving Covid easy compared with climate
Fifty-one billion and zero – the two numbers Bill Gates says you need to know about climate. Solving climate change would be “the most amazing thing humanity has ever done”, says the billionaire founder of Microsoft. By comparison, ending the pandemic is “very, very easy”, he claims. Mr Gates’s new book, How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, is a guide to tackling global warming. Don’t underestimate the scale of the challenge, he told me when we spoke last week. “We’ve never made a transition like we’re talking about doing in the next 30 years. There is no precedent for this.” Fifty-one billion is how many tonnes of greenhouse gases the world typically adds to the atmosphere each year. Zero is where we need to get to. Bill Gates steps down from Microsoft board Bill Gates showcases ‘reinvented toilet’ ‘How Covid could help save the planet’ Mr Gates’ focus is on how technology can help us make that journey. Renewable sources like wind and solar can help us decarbonise electricity but, as Mr Gates points out, that’s less than 30% of total emissions. We are also going to have to decarbonise the other 70% of the world economy – steel, cement, transport systems, fertiliser production and much, much more. We simply don’t have ways of doing that at the moment for many of these sectors. ‘Governments must lead’ The answer, says Mr Gates, will be an innovation effort on a scale the world has never seen before. This has to start with governments, he argues. At the moment, the economic system doesn’t price in the real cost of using fossil fuels. Most users don’t pay anything for the damage to the environment done by pollution from petrol in their car or the coal or gas that created the electricity in their home. “Right now, you don’t see the pain you’re causing as you emit carbon dioxide,” is how Mr Gates puts it. That’s why he says governments have to intervene. “We need to have price signals to tell the private sector that we want green products,” he says. That is going to require a huge investment by governments in research and development, Mr Gates argues, as well as support to allow the market for new products and technologies to grow, thereby helping drive down prices. Yet Mr Gates was famous for arguing that regulation stifled innovation when he was building Microsoft into the multi-billion-dollar behemoth it is now. So isn’t it a bit rich for him now to demand government intervention? He replies he has always supported “the basic role of government in terms of roads and justice and education and scientific research”. And, on the climate issue, he maintains it will be impossible to avoid a disaster, particularly for those who live near the equator, without governments around the world getting behind the effort. The Republican Party in America needs to recognise the importance of tackling climate change, says Mr Gates. This needs to be a “constant 30-year push”, he maintains. “Business just can’t change all that physical infrastructure unless the market signals are constant and very clear.” Private jets permitted Simply consuming less stuff – fewer flights, local food, less electricity and gas – won’t solve the problem. “India is going to build housing for their people, provide lighting at night, air conditioning to make conditions liveable,” Mr Gates believes, so global demand will not reduce. He argues political action is more important, demanding the government do the right thing, and, using our voices as consumers, insisting the same of companies. “If you buy an electric car, a hamburger made of a meat substitute, an electric heat pump for your home you are helping increase the production of these products and therefore helping drive prices down.” Mr Gates still enjoys the trappings of the billionaire lifestyle. He uses private jets but insists that they are powered by biofuels – aviation fuels made from plant products. “I pay three times as much now for my aviation fuel, you know, over $7m [£5m] a year in all my offset spending.” And he has joined a £3bn bidding war to buy one of the world’s largest private jet services companies, a business called Signature Aviation. Is that appropriate when you’ve just written a book telling the world how to avoid a climate disaster? “I don’t think getting rid of flying would make sense,” he replies. “That type of brute force technique won’t get us there.” He says the answer has to be “a type of aviation fuel that doesn’t cost much extra and is zero emission and that’s got to be biofuels or electric fuels or perhaps using green hydrogen to power the plane”. The right time Mr Gates has become something of a bogeyman for coronavirus conspiracy theorists. He has been accused of everything from concocting the virus in a secret laboratory as part of a project by global elites to depopulate the world, to using vaccinations to implant microchips in people to track and control them. He laughs when asked about this. “Why would I want to track people? You know, I’m just not that interested in where people are going.” The main focus for his huge charitable efforts to date has been tackling health issues in developing countries. He tells me he is used to people getting bored when he talks about tuberculosis and malaria at cocktail parties, so this is a real change from what he calls “the normal obscurity of working on infectious disease”. But he says he was worried that speaking out on climate might attract similar controversy. “I don’t want to dilute my voice on issues like polio eradication or malaria,” Mr Gates explains but says he felt this was the right time to publish his plan for tackling climate change. He says he wants his ideas to feed into the green stimulus packages being proposed around the world and to be discussed in the run-up to the crucial climate conference the UK is hosting in Glasgow in November
Bediatuo and wife land NAPO in huge problem over mathematical sets deal
The Herald has cited the name one Sarah Mary Olufemi Adetola said to be the wife of Secretary to the President of Ghana, Nana Asante Bediatuo in the multimillion-dollar the supply of the mathematical set contract which former Education Minister, Mathew Opoku Prempeh and his onetime Deputy Dr Yaw Osei Adutum were grilled on by the Appointments Committee of Parliament, last week. The Chief Executive Officer of the Bluegrass Group Ltd, Kwadwo Darko-Mensah alias Onasis has been arrested by officials of the National Investigations Bureaus (NIB) formerly Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to assist in an ongoing investigation. But The Herald’s investigations into the matter is beginning to reveal some interesting information which suggests Mathew Opoku Prempeh has a lot to hide on those to whom the contract was awarded and what caused the delay. The Herald is informed that NIB had stormed the home of Onasis on the claim of searching weapons and picked him away on that claim, however, his interrogation had been on the mathematical sets supply contract in which Sarah Mary Olufemi Adetola the wife of Nana Asante Bediatuo had been named. So serious is the revelation that Mathew Opoku Prempeh who has been nominated to be Minister of Energy, could be cited for perjury by the Appointment Committee over the mathematical sets supply contract because he did not speak the truth. His claim that the company has supplied the mathematical sets has also been disputed by insiders at NIB who say, what has been supplied is just around 50%. The arrest of the businessman, Mr Darko-Mensah, a known sympathizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), on the claim of assisting in the investigation over a very serious matter, The Herald learnt from highly placed sources within the NIB, to be a ruse by a powerful individual at the Presidency to cover up the real story behind supply contract. Mr Darko-Mensah Onasis is the Local Agent of an international company, Cornfield Group Ltd which was mandated in 2019 to deliver a total of eight hundred and fifty-three thousand (853,000) pieces of mathematical sets at a cost of? 75 per unit by the Ministry of Education in September 2019 which was neither delivered on schedule or in full. The 853,000 mathematical sets were supposed to be given to students for the 2020 WASSCE. Because of this WASSCE timeline, the contract was treated as “urgent” and sole-sourced without any form of bidding in September 2019 to the company. In addition, the mathematical sets contractor Bluegrass Limited was granted a free tax waiver of $3.6million by the government on the recommendation of Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Education Minister. The tax waiver was approved by parliament. Throughout the 2020 WASSCE however, no student received the “math sets” from the government. Indeed, the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) for example questioned why the mathematical sets which were sole-sourced at a “high price” were never delivered on time for the very purpose it was tagged as “urgent”. They criticize the validity of the sole sourcing procedure adopted and the 75 Ghana cedis cost because the contract can no longer be classified as an urgent need for the WASSCE candidates now. At ?75 per mathematical set, the total contract came to ?63,975,675. Blueglass Limited failed to deliver within the agreed time. It later issued PR-statements announcing it had delivered “the first consignment” without stating any figure, even long after the WASSCE was over. It is alleged that officers of the NIB arrested Kwadwo Darko-Mensah in relation to the contract. The issue of the Mathematical sets contract and the arrest and detention of CEO of Bluegrass Ltd Kwadwo Darko-Mensah came up during the vetting of Mathew Opoku-Prempeh with the former Education Minister disowning Mr Darko-Mensah, claiming he “didn’t know him from anywhere”, claim insiders say could make the minister-designate liable to perjury. Mathew Opoku Prempeh struggled to answer questions posed on the maths set matter by NDC MP Alhassan Suhuyini. Opoku Prempeh attempted to deflect blame to his deputy Adu Twum over the Mathematical sets contracts after Dr Adu Twum in his vetting said he had no answer to the question on the Mathematical sets. Why Kasoa residents want Weija-Kasoa tollbooth relocated
Some residents of Kasoa have called for the relocation of the Weija-Kasoa tollbooth. This, according to them, is a waste of productivity as they spend hours in long queues to pay GHS1 and 50 pesewas. They contend that relocation of the tollbooth or its automation will help resolve the challenge. “Sometimes you can stay here for 30 minutes or an hour before you can go. If they can do an expansion, I think it can help,” one resident told JoyNews. A 2020 Facebook post with an account name ‘Remove Kasoa Toll Booth’ indicated a similar concern. The Chairperson of the Tuba Taxi Drivers Association said the tollbooth is better-off relocated. He told JoyNews’ Maxwell Agbagba: “The tollbooth has been there for a very long time and it’s high time they move the tollbooth from the position it is to another location. “A lot of us in the Central Region work in Accra so during the morning at least from 5:am up to 10:am, the road is very busy and the traffic is so much that you can’t contain, there’s nowhere to pass,” he said. He, thus, called for police assistance in the area. “We need help, we need policemen at the junction, those who will manage the traffic and those who can take care of the pedestrians,” he appealed. Meanwhile, traders on the stretch care less about the plight of the residents as they say the location is their source of livelihood. To them, relocating the tollbooth means hectic moments for them and their businesses. “It will affect us greatly because even most of the traders here are students who are using the means to cater for their education,” one of the traders said. COVID-19: Organise private burials to decongest morgues – Mortuary workers to public
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana is warning of congestion at mortuaries in the coming days following the ban of funeral ceremonies with large gatherings. According to the association, some of their facilities can no more receive remains because of the rise in COVID-19 deaths. The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reimposed the ban on public gatherings as part of measures to contain the rise in COVID-19 cases in Ghana on Sunday, January 31, 2021. “Until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances and parties are banned. Private burials with not more than 25 people can take place with the enforcement of the social distancing, hygiene and mask-wearing protocols. Beaches, nightclubs, cinemas, and pubs continue to be shut. Our borders by land and sea remain closed. All workplaces, public and private must implore a shift system for workers in addition to the use of virtual platforms for business or work.” In an interview with Citi News, General Secretary of Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana, Richard Kofi Jordan called on the public to resort to private burials during this period to free up spaces within the mortuaries. According to him, failure on the part of families to heed to their request will compel them to reject fresh dead bodies. “The COVID-19 deaths together with deaths from other diseases are all put together. So what has happened is that once the president issued the ban on funerals, people have started cancelling their funerals as well waiting that one day and somehow, the president will lift it for them to have an elaborate funeral.” “So we suggest they can have the burial service and maybe later do the funeral otherwise anytime soon, we will have to be sending families away indicating that the mortuaries cannot collect more dead bodies.”
