The mother of the late Emmanuel Osei, the police constable guiding the bullion van who was killed by armed men days ago has broken silence over her son’s death. In an interview with Citi TV, the mother questioned who would now take care of her now that Emmanuel is no more. According to her, Emmanuel was the only person she had in the world but the gunmen who attacked the bullion van have taken away her hope and joy. She made this statement when Ghana Police Service led by the IGP visited her to mourn with her and the family following their loss. The IGP in consoling the mother of the deceased policeman assured her that his outfit would do everything possible to make sure the perpetrators are brought to book. In other news, information on social media suggests that one person has been arrested in connection to a bullion attack. Corporal Osei and one woman died during a broad daylight robbery in Korle Bu after some armed robbers sitting on motorbikes attacked a bullion van carrying an undisclosed amount of money and bolted with it. ‘We may get our next vaccines in August’ – Health Minister
The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has indicated the shortest time Ghana would get its next vaccines would be in August 2021. His comments follow intense pressure on the government over its decision to use intermediaries to secure over three million Sputnik-V vaccines at a cost of 19 dollars instead of 10 dollars on the international market. Speaking to Citi News, the Dorma Central legislator, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, said until such a time that Ghana receives the next batch of vaccines, the population must continue to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols. “We are waiting for vaccines. The agreements I signed, if they give me an indication that tomorrow morning come to the airport and collect your vaccines, we will go. Other than that, the earlier time we have an indication to get vaccines would be in August.” He also indicated the government is still aggressive in its quest to manufacture vaccines locally, adding that some companies have shown commitment to that course. “We have factories that were preparing themselves to produce vaccines and they have sent proposals to the government’s committee on the COVID-19 response team and things are progressing. If anything at all, in the very immediate future, we may be doing finishing and packing before we develop our own, and I think we have scientists who are ready to support us.” Meanwhile, he has justified the government’s procurement of Sputnik-V vaccines despite concerns about the cost involved. Mr Agyeman-Manu, who was commenting publicly on the matter for the first time, said Ghana had no choice but to procure the vaccines at an overpriced value. “I had an obligation to try to see how we can arrive at our herd immunity. When we started looking for vaccines to procure, intermediaries were not part of our agenda. We were looking at what we will get from COVAX.We could not have waited between March and August because we were in the second wave, and we were dying more than when we had the disease in 2020.” “Basic economics will tell you that in terms of scarcity, the market is the suppliers’ market. He or she dictates the price, not the buyer. I am surprised. We all learned these things at O-level, so why should I be a subject of ridicule?” he asked. Source: ghana-news.net2tvgh.com

Fulanis call for inclusion in the 2021 census
A group, which calls itself the African Centre for Fulani Affairs and Security, has called for fair treatment of citizens during the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC). The group expressed concern over what it described as a “deliberate exclusion” of Fulani ethnic groups in the upcoming exercise. It said the exclusion was due to an unfair perception and discriminative attitude, which had been developed against Fulani pastoral communities in Ghana. The group also complained that in the questionnaires for the PHC, the Fulani ethnic group had been classified under “All other tribes”. It indicated that such a classification was unacceptable, untenable, discriminatory and needed to be condemned. At a news conference in Accra yesterday, the acting Executive Director and Convener of the group, Mr Gedel Ahmed Mohammed, said in 1948, the PHC captured the population of the ethnic group in Ghana at 20,000, and the 1960 PHC suggested that the figure had risen to 25,000, while the 2010 PHC, the most recent estimate, recorded 300,000 Fulanis, including pastoralists in the country. “These are strong affirmation that the Fulani ethnic group have always been part of the PHC in Ghana by name, so why have we been exempted and classified under all other ethnic groups?” he asked. Contributions Mr Mohammed indicated that the contributions of the Fulani community to the socio-economic development of the country could not be underestimated and must, therefore, be recognised as such. “It is worth noting that the wife of the Vice-President is a Fulani. Indeed, the Adentan Constituency settled on a Fulani as its Member of Parliament during the 2020 general elections. There are several Fulanis working as medical doctors, engineers, lecturers, among several others, who play active roles in developing our dear nation,” he stated. He said raw statistics tended to overlook the many important economic benefits of the Fulani community in the country, adding that about 99.96 per cent of Fulanis in Ghana were Muslims, who played a significant and active role in the nation building process. Marginalisation He said the Fulani community also continued to suffer cultural, spatial isolation and political marginalisation in the country. Mr Mohammed said human development and the provision of public services in the Fulani community was still poor and generally far lower than in other areas of the country. For instance, he said, access to services such as the provision of national identity card, voters identity card and national insurance card was done on a discriminatory basis and were usually problematic to the Fulani community. He said these were a deliberate denial of the legitimate national status to a considerable portion of Fulani communities living in Ghana. In the recent past, Mr Mohamed insisted, Fulanis had negatively been tainted in the media space as constantly engaging in criminal activities and fueling insecurity such as herder-farmer conflict, kidnapping, money laundering and cattle rustling. He said the PHC was an appropriate opportunity for the government to establish a sustainable security solution where Fulanis could be captured to aid the national security planning of the country. Proposal Mr Mohammed, therefore, proposed that the PHC must endeavour to generate reliable data to accurately define key demographic parameters of the Fulani community and that such data must be mainstreamed at the level of government policy-making and interventions. Additionally, he said the government must take into consideration issues concerning demographic trends, settlement patterns and service provision in development interventions. Update: Miracle JHS student death, police autopsy confirms suicide
The police autopsy report has confirmed the late Leticia Kyere Pinaman, the 14-year-old final year student of the Miracle Junior School (JHS) committed suicide. A police source told Sky News the report was conducted at the Sunyani Regional Hospital by a team of pathologists from the Kumasi Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). “The said student killed herself by hanging and that nobody touched her or infringed any pain at any part of her body”, the quoted the report, and added, “it was detected by the autopsy that the girl was pregnant”. When contacted, Superintendent Kennedy Adusei, the Bono Regional Crime Officer confirmed the autopsy report was out but added he could not speak on the matter because the deceased family had challenged the outcome of the report. “The deceased family said they are not satisfied with the outcome of the autopsy and they said they have engaged a private pathologist from Korle Bu so we are waiting for them. Until that was done I cannot speak to the matter”, Supt Adusei told the GNA in a telephone interview. Efforts made by Sky News to contact the deceased family was unsuccessful as Mr Williams Kyere, the father of Leticia and Agya Mensah, the Abusuapanin (family head) failed to answer their phone calls. The body of Leticia was found hanging at the school’s dining hall on Monday, May 17, at about 1930 hours. This was at a time other students were attending bible studies at the school’s auditorium. A note found on the body, which has since been deposited at the regional hospital mortuary read “there is so much sorrow and pain in my heart”. The family has since the incident expressed dismay and averred that Leticia was murdered and hanged contrary to the school’s account that she committed suicide. Source: Skynewsroom
Samson’s Take: Where is the leadership, Mr President?
The last time I wrote about how your minister for this region was sadly hailed for what the prolific writer and trained lawyer Rodney Nkrumah Boateng described as “[f]ighting lawlessness with lawlessness”. I said watching Henry Quartey turn himself into police, prosecutor and judge, pronouncing pedestrians guilty of an offence in the road traffic law and handing them instant degrading punishments had long-term consequences for law enforcement. The law’s punishment for those refusing to use the footbridge at the Madina Zongo Junction does not include making them squat in or sweep the streets on pain of being flogged. Do I hear shouts of “go to court if you disagree”? Yes, those who point leaders to the law’s specific command on what ought to be done with excavators found at galamsey sites are being told the same – “go to court”! Citizens complain about clear unconstitutional and criminal conduct by rogue operatives in the National Security outfit while some of your men defend them. They have officially been found guilty of misconduct, but I hope we don’t have to “go to court” to get them properly sanctioned and implement the sound reforms advised by the eminent Emile Short Commission. Ordinary citizens must be witnessing the acts of total disregard for due process and law without any consequence. There is a real danger with general compliance and law enforcement, especially when people in authority and those making the laws are seen to disregard the law or break it without consequence. Our “honourables” made the Imposition of Restrictions law at the sight of Covid-19. It empowered Mr President to issue Executive Instruments as and when advised by the experts during the pandemic. This is because Covid-19 is a public health crisis for which government must protect lives. You banned rallies, yet you broke the law to campaign for votes. We saw you politicians break the law with impunity, but only poor citizens got arrested and punished with fines and jail terms for not wearing masks etc. Recently, the Christ Embassy church got into trouble for breaking the law you keep renewing each month for good reasons. You have banned funerals, allowing private burials with only 25 participants for good reasons. Families are denied the bodies of their relatives killed by Covid-19 because, by the science and advice from the experts, you must insist such corpses are buried immediately without ceremony. You just broke the law again with all who matter in your government. News broke in July 2020 that Covid-19 overcame my good friend Sir John. You put your life in danger, filing past a Covid-19 corpse displayed in the open to a great mass of mourners who breached all the Covid protocols you put in the law for us to observe. The police that supervised all this is the same that is shamelessly using the state’s power – the people’s power to suppress the people’s #FixTheCountry protest in the name of enforcing the law. If things continue this way, soon, you will not be able to continue the selective Animal Farm enforcement of the laws you disregard with impunity. Leaders know the way, they go the way, and they show the way. Let your example fix the law; it will #FixTheCountry. Samson Lardy AnyeniniJune 5, 2021Issue #19 Source: myjoyonline
