The Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has initiated an investigation into the recent fire at GRIDCo’s Akosombo substation. This move is part of a broader attempt to swiftly restore electricity supply and address the incident’s underlying causes.
During a visit to the affected site, Minister Jinapor emphasized the gravity of the situation, describing the damage as significant. He noted, ‘The extent of the destruction necessitates thorough scrutiny to determine what triggered this unfortunate event.’
William Amuna, a former energy sector executive and current board chairman of the Electricity Company of Ghana, will lead the seven-member investigative committee. The team comprises professionals from the Ghana National Fire Service, National Security, and the Energy Commission, among other relevant bodies, to ensure a comprehensive examination.
The Minister expressed optimism that the committee would deliver its findings within two to three weeks. ‘We anticipate a detailed report soon, enabling us to address the core issues and mitigate future risks,’ he stated.
In the meantime, efforts are underway to restore power as expediently as possible, with the Energy Ministry focusing on minimizing the impact of the outage on the national grid.
