In response to the sanitation concerns highlighted during a recent Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing, Zoomlion Ghana Limited has undertaken swift actions to address and rectify the issues in the Asante Akyem South Municipality. The concerns were initially raised by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Maame Safoah Appiah, regarding the state of waste management in the area.
During the hearing on April 21, 2026, the MCE pointed out problems such as refuse spillages at communal sites and the deterioration of waste containers. She also mentioned having to personally finance fuel for waste evacuation. Zoomlion responded promptly, meeting with the MCE at the hearing venue to assure her of immediate investigation and resolution.
The following day, April 22, a team comprising high-ranking officials from Zoomlion, including the Chief Internal Auditor and General Manager, visited the municipality. They conducted a thorough inspection of nine communal refuse sites, the landfill, and engaged with military personnel and the Municipal Head of Environment to assess the situation.
The investigation revealed significant waste spillage at the sites and identified operational challenges, primarily due to a delay in fuel supply caused by a shortage at the designated GOIL station. It was clarified that the MCE had offered to assist with fuel payments, but her offer was not executed as fuel became available.
Zoomlion immediately implemented corrective measures, investing nearly GHS20000 in machinery, fuel, and manpower to clear the waste. The cleanup operation was supported by additional trucks provided by the MCE, leading to a marked improvement in cleanliness.
To prevent future issues, Zoomlion has initiated long-term strategies, including providing more containers, repairing trucks, and diversifying fuel supply sources. The company also plans to reinforce its “Operation No Spillage” initiative to maintain high sanitation standards throughout Asante Akyem South and other regions.
Zoomlion remains committed to collaborating with local authorities to ensure clean and healthy environments across Ghana.
