Ablakwa Decries South African Xenophobia as African Betrayal

In a passionate address, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has strongly criticized the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, labeling them a significant betrayal of African unity. His comments come in the wake of disturbing videos circulating on social media, including one depicting an assault on a Ghanaian national, Emmanuel Asamoah.

During a recent diplomatic meeting with Sierra Leonean officials, Ablakwa expressed his dismay over the violence, emphasizing the historical support African nations, particularly Ghana, provided to South Africa in its fight against apartheid. He recalled the critical role Ghana played in offering refuge and resources to South African freedom fighters during their struggle for independence.

Ablakwa highlighted that such attacks undermine decades of solidarity among African countries. He urged African leaders to denounce these violent actions and reaffirm their commitment to Pan-Africanism, a philosophy advocating for a united and cooperative continent.

Further, Ablakwa assured measures to ensure the safety of Ghanaian citizens in South Africa, while maintaining that Ghana will continue to protect South Africans within its borders. He called for mutual respect and protection of African nationals across the continent.

Echoing his sentiments, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francess Piagie Alghali, also condemned the xenophobic incidents, urging the South African government to address the situation within the framework of humanitarian law and African solidarity.
