The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a warning to the public regarding the escalating issue of cable theft, urging citizens to remain watchful and assist in protecting vital power infrastructure.
This appeal was made by Ing. Fred Kwabena Bediako, ECG’s General Manager for Special Projects, during a visit to the Ashanti Region on Thursday. He highlighted that the continued theft of electrical cables is causing disruptions in power supply, damaging equipment, and resulting in substantial financial losses for the company.
Ing. Bediako stressed that these thefts not only impede ECG operations but also adversely affect economic activities and daily life in the impacted communities. “We are highly concerned about the surge in cable theft incidents. These unlawful actions trigger frequent outages and degrade the quality of service we strive to provide,” he stated.
He urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior near electrical installations to the authorities. He emphasized that community involvement is crucial in tackling this issue and ensuring a reliable power supply.
The ECG management is touring various parts of the Ashanti Region to evaluate ongoing projects, engage with stakeholders, and strengthen measures to enhance service delivery. Ing. Bediako reaffirmed the company’s dedication to securing its infrastructure and called for enhanced cooperation between ECG, security agencies, and the public to combat these illegal activities.
Despite investments in infrastructure and monitoring systems aimed at reducing vulnerabilities, ECG officials maintain that public support is vital in the battle against cable theft.
