Free Zones CEO Apologizes for Comments on Galamsey Debate

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, has publicly apologized to Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye, the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, for her prior comments made in response to his stance on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Dr. Awusi’s apology followed a radio interview that generated significant public discourse, during which her remarks were perceived as controversial. Speaking on Accra FM on Friday, April 24, Dr. Awusi expressed regret if her words were taken offensively, emphasizing her respect for Apostle Nyamekye’s influential role and his dedication to societal betterment.

Highlighting the importance of Apostle Nyamekye’s leadership within the Church of Pentecost, Dr. Awusi acknowledged the considerable commitment required to lead such an institution. She reiterated that her initial comments were not intended to disrespect but were a reaction to his observations on the detrimental impacts of illegal mining, particularly its effects on religious practices and the environment.

The issue arose from Apostle Nyamekye’s address at the Church’s 48th General Conference, where he brought attention to the harmful consequences of galamsey on communities and its interference with religious ceremonies like water baptism. Dr. Awusi clarified that her reaction was based on her interpretation of these statements.
