As tensions rise in Mthatha, South Africa, the Ghanaian community has been urged to exercise caution due to a planned protest against foreign nationals. Scheduled for Thursday, April 23, the demonstration aims to highlight local grievances over job allocations, with residents expressing frustration over competition from foreign workers.
The protest is expected to kick off at 9:00 a.m., concluding by 11:00 a.m. Local South African groups are leading the charge, insisting that employment should be prioritized for citizens to curb the perceived takeover by foreigners.
Dr. Yirenyi Gyekye Darko, who heads the Ghanaian community in Mthatha, has communicated with local law enforcement. The police have assured him that the protest will be peaceful and under strict supervision. ‘I have spoken with a station commander who confirmed that the demonstration will proceed peacefully, with police actively managing the situation,’ Dr. Darko stated.
Despite these assurances, Dr. Darko has recommended that Ghanaians take additional safety measures. ‘We have advised our community members to remain indoors and keep their businesses closed until midday when normalcy is expected to return,’ he advised.
The protest reflects a broader discontent in South Africa, where locals demand that the government prioritize their employment needs over those of foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, Nigerians, and Zimbabweans. ‘The demonstrators are focused on ensuring that job opportunities are reserved for South Africans, as many believe that foreign nationals are occupying positions meant for them,’ Dr. Darko explained.
