Switzerland has officially endorsed Morocco’s proposal for autonomy in the Sahara, recognizing it as a credible and pragmatic approach to resolving the long-standing regional conflict. This endorsement was articulated in a Joint Communication between Swiss Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during the latter’s visit to Bern.
The Swiss government highlighted the significance of Security Council Resolution 2797, which underscores the potential of genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a feasible resolution to the dispute. Switzerland also reaffirmed its support for the United Nations’ central role and the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy in the peace process.
This backing from Switzerland adds to the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, a momentum significantly bolstered by the leadership of King Mohammed VI. The initiative seeks to affirm Morocco’s sovereignty while providing a sustainable and peaceful solution to the Sahara conflict.
