Gates Foundation Reviews Epstein Links Before Gates’ Congress Testimony

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is undertaking an independent investigation into its former connections with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. This comes just weeks ahead of Bill Gates’ scheduled appearance before the United States Congress to address the same issue.

This investigation was catalyzed by the release of documents from the Department of Justice earlier this year, revealing email exchanges between Epstein and foundation staff, alongside photographs implicating Gates in meetings with Epstein and obscured individuals.

According to a statement, the review was initiated in March with the endorsement of both Gates and the foundation’s independent governing board. The review aims to scrutinize the foundation’s historical interactions with Epstein and assess its current vetting procedures for new philanthropic initiatives. An update is anticipated by summer.

In a recent staff memo, Foundation CEO Mark Suzman disclosed the review details and noted the foundation’s plans to downsize, cutting up to 500 positions, approximately 20% of its workforce, by 2030. This is part of a broader restructuring strategy to keep operating expenses at a maximum of 1.25 billion dollars against a projected 2026 budget of 9 billion dollars.

Suzman also mentioned that a recent board meeting in London dedicated time to discussing the ramifications of the DOJ’s Epstein-related documents on the foundation’s operations and public image.

Gates has insisted that his interactions with Epstein were strictly for philanthropic discussions, acknowledging that the association was regrettable. Melinda French Gates, who left the foundation’s board post-divorce in 2021, cited Gates’ continued engagement with Epstein as a contributing factor to their separation.

As Gates prepares to testify in June, the foundation has not revealed who will lead the external review or its exact scope.
