Asantehene Warns Against Political Interference in Chieftaincy

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern caution to governmental figures, urging them to refrain from exploiting political power to interfere in traditional chieftaincy matters. This warning comes amid increasing instances of political meddling in local disputes, particularly in regions such as Sampa.

During a meeting with the Asanteman Council, the Asantehene emphasized the fleeting nature of political authority. “Power is not everlasting,” he stated, warning against the misuse of political influence in chieftaincy affairs. He highlighted the disregard for judicial rulings in communities including Sampa and Nkyeraa, where local disputes continue to undermine legitimate authority.

The Asantehene expressed his dismay at certain individuals who defy court verdicts, such as the instance in Sampa where an outsider claims royal status despite rulings in favor of the legitimate chief, Sampahene Gyafla. He also criticized some Paramount Chiefs for their inaction, urging them to uphold the dignity of the Asante kingdom.

Invoking the legacy of historic Asante figures, he called on traditional leaders to be vigilant and proactive in protecting the integrity of their roles. “Our ancestors like Tweneboa Koduah and Yaa Asantewaa would not stand for such indifference,” he remarked, reiterating his commitment to maintaining the autonomy of the chieftaincy.
