In a move that has ignited significant debate across Ghana, prominent broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere has voiced strong opposition to the government’s decision to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. During a recent panel discussion on JoyNews’ NewsFile, Adom-Otchere expressed concerns that the name change is part of a broader agenda aimed at glorifying Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, whose legacy he argues is far from saintly.
The broadcaster characterized Nkrumah as a ‘despot,’ claiming that the proposed renaming is an effort to erase the historical context surrounding the 1966 coup that removed him from power. He pointed out that Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, after whom the airport is named, played a pivotal role in that coup, and he believes that removing Kotoka’s name from such a significant national landmark is an attempt to sanitize Nkrumah’s reputation ahead of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the coup.
“This name change is about more than just a label; it represents a revisionist history that seeks to depict Nkrumah as a hero,” Adom-Otchere asserted. He further remarked on the shifting arguments surrounding Kotoka’s legacy, noting that some have framed him as merely a coup maker, neglecting the historical context that led to Nkrumah’s ousting.
In response to the growing controversy, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed the government’s intention to submit a bill to Parliament aimed at facilitating the name change. “We are set to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” he stated during a press briefing. This announcement has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some supporting the change due to Kotoka’s role in the coup, while others argue that it is unnecessary and that historical names should be preserved.
As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how this decision will influence public sentiment and the political landscape in Ghana. Many citizens continue to engage in discussions about the implications of renaming such a crucial establishment, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and understanding the country’s complex history.
