In a bold move that has ignited discussions nationwide, the government of Ghana is considering renaming Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. This initiative, announced by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, aims to honor the Ga people, the original inhabitants of Accra.
Afia Korankyewaa, who serves as the Deputy Director of Operations for the United Party (UP), has publicly endorsed this proposal. In a recent interview with C TV, she emphasized the importance of recognizing influential figures in the nation’s history when naming significant landmarks. “We should commemorate leaders who have made positive contributions, like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah or J.J. Rawlings, rather than those associated with controversial acts,” she stated, expressing her approval of the government’s decision under President Mahama.
Korankyewaa highlighted that renaming the airport would not only honor the local populace but also foster a sense of unity among citizens. “The name Accra International Airport represents all Ghanaians and eliminates any political leanings that could lead to discord. It’s a name that the Ga people can be proud of,” she remarked.
The announcement has drawn a variety of responses from the public, with some viewing the change as a positive step towards inclusivity and others feeling that the current name holds historical significance that should be preserved.
As discussions continue, the implications of this renaming are set to be a focal point in Ghana’s political landscape, reflecting the nation’s evolving narrative and values.
