Ghana Airports Company Defends Airport Signage Amid Criticism

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has stepped forward to defend the newly installed signage at Accra International Airport, following a wave of public criticism. The backlash emerged after the signage was unveiled, with many describing the execution as substandard and embarrassing.

What GACL Says
GACL clarified that the project entailed repainting and restoring the airport’s frontage signage after the facility was renamed. This endeavor was executed overnight to minimize disruptions to airport operations and passenger flow. According to the management, the timing and execution were meticulously planned, taking into account the location and height of the installation.

Background to the Change
The signage update is part of a broader governmental decision to rename the airport from Kotoka International Airport back to Accra International Airport, a change that officially took effect on February 23, 2026. The new signage was subsequently unveiled on March 20, 2026.

Public Reaction
Images and videos of the new signage quickly went viral on social media platforms. Many Ghanaians criticized the work, suggesting it appeared poorly executed, with some observers pointing out that the old markings were not adequately removed before repainting. This led to descriptions of the signage as “disrespectful” and below the expected standard for an international airport.

GACL’s Response to Criticism
In response to the feedback, GACL’s Managing Director, Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, stated that public opinion is valued and will inform ongoing improvements. GACL reiterated its commitment to continuous upgrades aimed at enhancing the passenger experience.

Bigger Picture
The controversy arises as GACL embarks on a broader $800 million airport modernization program, which includes the introduction of new security screening technology. Additionally, a new Airport Infrastructure Development Charge is anticipated to help finance these upgrades.

Bottom Line
While GACL maintains that the signage upgrade was executed properly, the strong public backlash underscores concerns about quality and attention to detail, particularly for a facility that serves as a key national gateway. As GACL moves forward with its modernization plans, maintaining public trust and ensuring quality execution will be pivotal.
