Ghana’s Government to Disburse Gratuity Payments to Retired Military Personnel

On February 25, 2026, the Ghanaian government announced the approval of overdue gratuity payments for retired military personnel, a decision that will benefit nearly 2,400 individuals. This move comes after extensive discussions between the Military High Command and the Ministries of Finance and Defence, aimed at resolving a five-year stalemate regarding the gratuity formula.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed this development through a statement released by Acting Director General of Public Relations, Veronica Adzo Arhin. Under the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129, 2,393 retired officers and soldiers—comprising 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers—will receive payments based on the newly revised gratuity formula.

According to the GAF, the revised payments will apply to all military personnel who retired from November 2020 onwards. The initiative will unfold in a phased manner over the next two years, with the first payment tranche expected to be distributed by the end of the business day on February 27, 2026.

The payment scheme will occur in four separate installments, with disbursements planned between February 2026 and December 2027. The GAF has assured that all future retirements will adhere strictly to the guidelines set forth in CI 129.

The Military High Command expressed gratitude towards the government for facilitating this resolution, marking a significant step towards rectifying the longstanding payment issues affecting retired military personnel.
