Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the United Nations for its steadfast support over the years. In a recent statement, he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for its citizens.
Minister Mohammed-Mubarak highlighted the government’s proactive steps to uphold law and order, emphasizing, “Ghana remains dedicated to protecting the well-being of its people and advancing efforts to promote harmony in the region.”
This statement came in response to praises from Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS). During his visit to Accra on April 14, Mr. Simão commended Ghana for its unwavering role in fostering stability both domestically and across the West African region.
“Ghana is a beacon of stability in West Africa, and its contributions to peace and security are immensely valued,” Mr. Simão noted. He highlighted Ghana’s leadership in initiatives aimed at conflict prevention and resolution.
The meeting also focused on the Accra Initiative, a regional strategy designed to tackle security challenges such as terrorism and violent extremism in West Africa. Both parties recognized the need to revitalize the initiative to enhance its effectiveness against emerging threats.
They pledged mutual collaboration to ensure the initiative’s revival, with the goal of strengthening coordination among member states to foster sustainable peace.
The Ministry of the Interior and UNOWAS agreed to maintain open communication channels to successfully implement their shared objectives, including rejuvenating the Accra Initiative.
