Government Enhances Poultry Production with Distribution of 110,000 Birds

In a significant move to bolster the poultry industry in Ghana, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, recently announced the distribution of 110,000 birds as part of the government’s ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative. This initiative aims to empower local farmers in the Bono East Region.

The presentation took place in Techiman, the regional capital, where Dumelo emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing domestic poultry production. The birds will be allocated to farmers across 11 political and administrative Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.

In addition to the birds, the government is set to supply 48,833 bags of feed, 63,000 doses of antibiotics, and 44,000 units of glucose to ensure the health and growth of the poultry. Each assembly is expected to manage the distribution of 10,000 birds and to oversee their welfare for optimal productivity.

Dumelo reiterated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken and create employment opportunities within the agricultural sector. He also announced plans to provide subsidized fertilizers, seedlings, and other essential farming inputs through the Feed Ghana Programme.

During the event, Francis Owusu Antwi, the Bono East Regional Minister, praised the ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative and expressed optimism that local farmers would capitalize on this support to contribute significantly to the nation’s poultry sector. He urged the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) personnel to enhance monitoring practices to ensure the success of the initiative.
