In a recent interview, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, widely recognized as Chairman Wontumi, who leads the Ashanti Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in a state of anxiety concerning the upcoming presidential primaries of the NPP. Wontumi conveyed these thoughts during a conversation with JoyNews on January 31, 2026.
Wontumi claimed that the NDC is closely observing the NPP’s activities and is unsettled by the party’s strategic decisions leading up to the primaries. He stated, “The NDC is panicking because of our decision to proceed with this vote. They are monitoring us, and it is clear they are concerned about the implications of our actions.”
He further articulated confidence in the NPP’s future, suggesting that the challenges currently faced by the party will diminish after the primaries, stating, “Post-primaries, all our issues will be resolved, and we will pass on these burdens to the NDC to manage until the 2028 elections.”
As the NPP prepares for its internal elections, over 211,000 delegates are expected to participate across more than 300 polling stations nationwide. The competition includes five notable candidates vying for the party’s presidential nomination. These candidates include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and former MP Kennedy Agyapong.
Wontumi’s remarks underscore the political tension as both parties gear up for the impending elections, with eyes on the impact of these primaries on the NPP’s standing and the challenges that the NDC may face in the near future.
