During a recent media interaction held on February 12, 2026, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin articulated his strong belief in the capabilities of his First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor. Bagbin asserted that the nation and the legislative assembly would significantly benefit if Ahiafor were to assume his role as Speaker.
His remarks came during the unveiling of Parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan for the period of 2026 to 2030, where he praised Ahiafor’s commitment to parliamentary responsibilities and his extensive experience with legislative operations. Bagbin remarked, “If we are fortunate that my First Deputy Speaker takes over from me, it would be advantageous for all.” This statement is perceived by political analysts as a robust endorsement of Ahiafor’s qualifications for leadership.
Bagbin highlighted the necessity of continuity and institutional knowledge as vital components for enhancing governance within Parliament. He emphasized that the effectiveness of the legislature is largely reliant on capable deputies who can continue to nurture and implement the House’s vision and operational efficiency.
Ahiafor, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, has been instrumental in assisting the Speaker with parliamentary duties. His role as First Deputy Speaker has involved overseeing sessions and significantly contributing to the maintenance of order and adherence to legislative protocols.
Additionally, Bagbin urged the government to allocate land for the establishment of a dedicated Parliamentary complex. He noted that the current situation of operating within the State House imposes structural and logistical constraints that hinder the legislature’s effectiveness and growth. “We should not remain tenants of the State House; having our own premises is essential for our operations as a governmental branch,” he stated, pointing out the numerous infrastructural limitations that Parliament faces.
The newly launched Corporate Strategic Plan is designed to act as a comprehensive framework guiding parliamentary activities over the next five years. Its main objectives include boosting transparency, accountability, and effective representation in Ghana’s democratic processes.
Political experts interpret Bagbin’s endorsement of Ahiafor as a signal of recognition for his contributions to parliamentary leadership, while also spotlighting the pressing infrastructure needs of the legislature. Although there were no indications of Bagbin planning to resign in the immediate future, his comments have ignited conversations among political circles regarding leadership succession and the future trajectory of Parliament.
As Parliament looks to implement the strategic plan, it aims to enhance its legislative, oversight, and representative functions, ultimately striving to deepen Ghana’s democratic development.
